Update: Sword Attack at Brinellskolan School in Fagersta — One Dead, Suspect Shot by Police

On Friday, 21 August 2026, at 2:06 pm, Swedish police received an emergency call reporting an ongoing violent attack at Brinellskolan, an upper-secondary school (gymnasieskola) in Fagersta, Västmanland County. A man armed with a sword had entered the school and attacked multiple people.


Police response: Officers responded rapidly. Just ten minutes later, at 2:16 pm, a police patrol shot the suspect in the leg and detained him. A tactical unit and police helicopter were also dispatched to the scene.


Casualties: According to police and Region Västmanland (the regional healthcare authority):

  • One person has died.

  • Two boys, aged 12–17, are seriously injured but in stable condition — one underwent emergency surgery on Friday afternoon.

  • One additional person sustained minor injuries.

  • The suspect himself was also injured after being shot by police.

Hospitals in the region activated their emergency response protocol (stabsläge). A crisis support center was opened at the Risbrohallen sports hall for students, parents, and other affected community members.


About the suspect: According to consistent reporting from SVT, TV4, and local outlets, the suspect is an approximately 18-year-old man from Fagersta and a former student at the school. He has a prior conviction for assaulting another student at a different school he previously attended, and has previously received care under Sweden's Care of Young Persons Act (LVU), which applies to minors with serious behavioral issues or difficult family circumstances.

Police are investigating a TikTok account suspected of being linked to the attack, after images posted on the account appeared to match the school's restroom. Unconfirmed reports also suggest the suspect wore a helmet during the attack. The motive remains unknown.


Note: In line with standard Swedish media practice, mainstream outlets (SVT, TV4, Sveriges Radio) have not published the suspect's full identity, given his age and the ongoing investigation. Some unofficial blogs have published a name, but this has not been confirmed by mainstream sources and should be treated with caution.


A troubling prior incident: This is not the first security scare at Brinellskolan this year. On 8 May 2026, a threatening message referencing a "school shooting" (skolskjutning) was found written on a restroom wall at the school. Students were sent home early, and several other schools in Fagersta locked down as a precaution. Police later assessed that the immediate threat had passed. Authorities have not yet confirmed any connection between the May threat and Friday's attack, though the coincidence has drawn particular attention as the investigation continues — including questions about what security measures the school implemented following the May incident.


Official response: Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson addressed the incident on Friday afternoon, calling it "a serious incident" occurring on the first day back from summer break, and urged the public to let police and emergency services work without interference. He subsequently canceled his planned summer speech (sommartal). Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer said the government was in close contact with police and closely following developments. King Carl XVI Gustaf also issued an official statement, expressing shock and grief that Sweden had once again been struck by a school attack, and extending his sympathies to the victims, their families, and the students, staff, and residents of Fagersta.


Current situation: Police say there is no indication of any additional suspects and that there is currently no threat to the public. Investigators continue to process the crime scene, gather nearby security camera footage, and take witness statements.
